Late Wednesday, after 2 days of intense testimony and debate, the Republican-controlled Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 14, legislation that would require a vote to present proof of identification when voting. The bill passed 20-12 with all 19 Republican Senators and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst voting to approve SB14, and we thank our Senators for standing united in passing this important legislation! Special thanks goes out again to Governor Rick Perry and David Dewhurst for making this a priority issue and allowing our legislators to take this debate up so early in the session.

The Republican Party of Texas recognizes and congratulates each of our State Senators for their leadership on this issue, and particularly recognizes Sen. Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) for standing firm in the face of angry Democrats who fought bitterly against the integrity of our election process.

The Voter ID bill now moves on to the Texas House of Representatives, where our Republican super-majority is expected to approve the measure with little delay. However, we still encourage all Texans who are concerned about the integrity of our elections to contact their state representatives and urge them to support the passage of this legislation.
