AUSTIN, TX – Yesterday, the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) announced that Justin Nelson, the Democrat candidate for Texas Attorney General, violated state campaign laws. Mr. Nelson swore, under penalty of perjury, that he accepted contributions from labor unions in violation of Texas law. In addition, Mr. Nelson failed to report what goods or services multiple donors provided his campaign, also in violation of Texas law. Violations of these laws carry potential civil and criminal penalties.
“As the Republican Party of Texas, we advocate for simpler and fewer laws. We also advocate for enforcement of those laws already on the books,” said Republican Party of Texas Chairman James Dickey. “Mr. Nelson swore that he accepted illegal contributions, and clearly failed to report the goods and services his campaign received from certain donors. His inability to follow the law as a political candidate speaks volumes to what his conduct would be as an officeholder.”
